Townsend Music School
phone: 636-394-4055 townsendmusicschool.com TOWNSEND MUSIC SCHOOL offers lessons in piano, voice, violin, viola, flute, guitar, theory and composition. We have the most reasonable tuition and the most student friendly policies of all of the major music schools. We offer only the best when it comes to music lessons. We do not offer class lessons, since class lessons are inferior to regular private lessons. (class lessons are, of course, much more lucrative, but we will not compromise our principals) Our long history of success, 59 years, and our students, past and present, are proof that you cannot "go wrong" choosing Townsend for your music education. Because our staff is made up of professional musicians, we can teach the beginner as well as the very advanced student. (Several of our instructors hold Masters degrees in music as well as Bachelor of Music degrees) In addition, our instructors are ALL excellent, proficient musicians. We have been teaching the correct way to play or sing for over 59 years. Students learn to read music, count, and play. They also learn the correct posture, correct technique, theory, etc. Some music history and music appreciation is also included. We also have a MUSICAL KINDERGARTEN class for age 3 to 6. At our school, the students LIKE their lessons and WANT to come for their lessons. Most are CRAZY about their lessons. They are certainly proud of their teachers and of the fact that they take lessons at Townsend. (see the "Check it Out" page at our website) Start lessons with our professional instructors and you can be sure you are being taught correctly. .............BEGINNERS.......TAKE NOTE!............. It is of utmost importance for children to start with the right teacher from the very beginning. It is very important to have a teacher who can relate to each student. You need to make sure the teacher knows how to play, read music, and count. You know for sure that you have the right teacher when you come to Townsend. You will see the difference with our school. We love to teach and are very proud of each and every one of our students. Individual lessons ages 4 and up. We are located in Chesterfield, MO, although our address is in Ballwin, MO. • Location: Chesterfield, MO

Have you pissed off anyone by refusing to play "quiet"?
Do you have at least five picks or sticks within ten feet of you at all times? Are you ready to make some faces melt and ears bleed? So far it's rhythm, bass and possibly a third "mystery member". We're looking for a drummer and lead guitar. Must be easygoing, and adaptable to multiple styles. We have not decided 100% on our sound or songs, but originals are on the way. Interested? Email me at bush_master@hotmail.com with your influences, gear, first song you learned, and your current favorite song that won't get out of your head no matter what you try... • Location: East of the Mississippi

I am a very talented singer songwriter with a lot of original material. I need a guitarist and bassist to fit all of the pieces together. AT LEAST ONE of these people will be able to sing IN KEY harmony but preferably ALL will be able to sing a little back up. I am auditioning people IMMEDIATELY. I prefer people my age or close. I am 31. 21 years old + and previous stage time REQUIRED! I would like to make friends from this project as well. We better be friends cause we are going to spend A LOT of time together! So no one with something holding them back from playing gigs or touring. My plans are BIG and I hope to be touring in the next two years!
We may have to start out doing a few covers so the genre will be rock/ alternative. Tool, Rage, S.T.P., etc. I would prefer to just work on the original songs that are finished and record them, THEN write more with everyone's input. Start playing original venues, and play POINTFEST next year! If anyone else wants to play POINTFEST next year then let's set a goal and do it! I have the vocals and the songwriting ability to start us out. I need YOU to finish the circle of perfection! Practice will be at my house in St. Peters unless someone has a better place in the local area. Auditions are currently being held at my place as well except drummers. I will come to you! Lol! I recorded some songs with NO vocal help on a cheap Logitech mic used for TALKING, not singing and playing an acoustic guitar, and they are on my space. myspace dot com/quinnmartin Any questions please respond to this email or call 314-599-7568 and leave a message. Thank you and I can't wait to meet the rest of the greatest band ever to hit St. Louis! • Location: Saint Peters, mo

Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen concertposted: November 6, 2009, 07:16 AM

Steve Gillette is best known as a songwriter, with songs recorded by artists from Ian & Sylvia to Garth Brooks, from Jiminy Cricket to John Denver. His song Darcy Farrow alone has been recorded by more than one hundred artists since 1966, most recently by Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Nanci Griffith. Quite literally, he wrote the book on songwriting: Songwriting and the Creative Process (Sing Out Press) is a standard text in songwriting classes across the country. Steve sings in a rich baritone and is a virtuoso on guitar, using a unique fingerpicking style with a flat-pick and two fingers. His most recent solo recording is Texas and Tennessee (Redwing Music), named One of the Top Ten Folk Albums of 1998 by Tower Records’ Pulse Magazine.
Cindy Mangsen, who married Gillette in 1989, is also a songwriter, but her focus has been on songkeeping. Cindy is a master interpreter of traditional ballads, rich in myth and legend. She plays guitar, concertina, and banjo, and is renowned for her compelling voice, described by one critic as a voice that can warm a New England winter. Mangsen also performs and records with Anne Hills and Priscilla Herdman. Never Grow Old and Never Grow Up, duet albums by Mangsen and Hills, were two of the most significant traditional folk recordings of the ‘90s. Cindy’s most recent solo album, Songs of Experience (Redwing Music), won the Editor’s Choice Award for Traditional Folk Music from Crossroads Magazine. As Steve comments, “Cindy has brought me back to my roots, and i think I’ve influenced her in terms of ensemble playing, rhythmic development, arrangement and performing. We’re very fortunate to play for people who really listen and who come to a concert with a certain sense of history. There’s a strong feeling of community about this music.” Steve and Cindy’s latest project is a quartet called Fourtold, with Anne Hills and Michael Smith. The group released a self-titled album in early 2003 (Appleseed), Steve and Cindy have been featured on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and Mountain Stage, and have delighted audiences across North America and Europe with their music, warmth, and humor. They have recorded three duet albums: Live in Concert (1991), The Light of the Day (named Best folk Album of 1996 by WFMT and WDET), and A Sense of Place (2001, Redwing Music). Steve and Cindy are finding that many people are visiting their web page before concerts. The address, www.compassrosemusic.com, contains sound files, a full one-hour concert video recorded at the Kennedy Center, and an infamous jokes page, plus a wealth of links to other folk music rsources on the Web. When: Sunday, November 15, 2009. The show starts at 2 p.m. and doors open at 1 p.m. Where: The Espenschied Chapel is located just north of Mascoutah High School, at 317 County Road in Mascoutah. Ticket information: Advance concert tickets are $10 each and are available at The Bee Hollow Market, 217 East Main Street, Mascoutah. Tickets at the door will be $12. Group discounts for groups of 10 or more. The Espenschied Chapel was built at the bequest of a generous local family in the 1920s. Although beautifully constructed, the Chapel fell out of use in the 1950s, as funeral homes made memorial services available. As a result the Chapel stood empty for nearly 50 years and the ravages of time took their toll on the building. The building was scheduled to be demolished, but through volunteer efforts and donations the Chapel was saved in 1999. Now the Chapel is restored and serves as a venue for concerts and exhibits. The chapel, a not-for-profit venture, is self-supporting and not affiliated with any church. For more information on the program, tickets, or the chapel, check www.espenschiedchapel.org, or e-mail espenschiedchapel@mac.com or call (618) 566-7425. For more information on the program, tickets, or the chapel, check www.espenschiedchapel.org, or e-mail espenschiedchapel@mac.com or call (618) 566-7425. • Location: Espenschied Chapel, 317 County Road, Mascoutah, IL 62258

Duo for hire for your event (Just For S &G)posted: November 4, 2009, 06:53 PM

We are Steve Barteau & Greg Klutenkamper, brothers-in-law that formed a duo called Just for S & G. Steve got out of the Navy in 1986 & we have been playing music ever since. Both are big fans of the Beatles, Eagles & Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Steve tends to be more Country, Greg tends to be more Rock, Steve tends to be more melodic, Greg tends to be more riff based. This allows them to complement each others playing style. However, they have been told their voice harmonies are their strongest point. We are happy & willing to play all night, just the two of us, but our approach to performing live music is a little different than most, in that we welcome others to come up & perform with us. We have a great big book with Rock, Country, Folk & Blues, new & old, over 350 songs that we are capable of playing, so there is always something some one wants to hear and/or join in with. We have a song list with all our songs on that we play, we set those on the tables & welcome others to come up & jam. It’s a little warmer & more personal than a karaoke, if some one wants to play guitar, we have extra guitars, we can even switch to a banjo, mandolin, harmonica or a dobro, or – well you get the point.
It may surprise some to see just how talented the audience members can be, and how willing those folks are to get up there & jam along with us. We find that people stay longer & spend more because they are having fun, and its all about having fun. We are looking to develop a larger following, so we need a regular place to play, we were looking for approximately 2 times a month or every other week end. However, since we both got kids in college, we will play when ever we get a chance! We charge $225.00 for 4 hours but we are somewhat flexible there too, especially if it is a steady booking. Since we are a duo, we fit where other performers can’t, or places that don’t usually have live music. We usually play amplified acoustic with occasional electric guitar lead, but we are capable of playing just acoustically too. We can play quietly in the background, or get ‘em up dancing. We have played along with teenagers to teenagers of all ages, music makes everybody young. Check out our Web site at www.myspace.com/justforsandg for a demo of some of our music. You can also contact me at Sstevieb1@charter.net. Thanks for considering us, Steve, and Greg • Location: St. Charles

GUITAR & bass lessons -- FUNposted: November 4, 2009, 05:25 AM

Some music teachers are too rigid and strict. Teaching only the "proper" classical methods and effectively taking the fun out of music.
Others are too lenient. They'll show you how to play a piece of music without explaining how it works. It's like learning to paint by numbers! Get the best of both worlds. We'll start with the fundamentals and (within reason) learn to play some of your favorite songs. Just bring a CD or I-pod. (tape and vinyl too!) My goal is to teach students to understand the instrument so that they can begin to learn songs by ear, improvise, and write music! Lessons are 1-on-1 in a studio space at one of St. Louis' best live music venues, Off Broadway conveniently located near I-55 and Arsenal. Private home lessons available as well. Experienced players who want to improve your music theory, improvisation, songwriting, or technique, are encouraged to call. Let's see if I have what you're looking for. All materials provided Beginners welcome! $25 per hour with discounts for monthly prepayment Call or email for more info. 314-327-3247 for directions and venue info: www.offbroadwaystl.com • Location: St. Louis, MO

Just for S & G features over 350 songs on our song list, from all different kinds of music; Country, Rock, Folk, Pop, etc. We try to emphasize playing what the audience wants to hear vs. playing off a set list and we invite the audience to jam & sing along with us as we play the songs that we all know and love.
Steve plays 6 and 12 string guitars, harmonica & sings lead vocals. Greg plays guitar and banjo and mandolin and vocals. Just for S & G has our own sound system so we play bars & weddings & block parties, but we are small enough to play in your basement or coffee house as well. Because we are a duo, Just for S & G is a very cost effective form of live entertainment; live music at DJ prices! ($250 for four hours -Local-)Last minute inquires are welcome, but contact us as soon as possible so we can make accommodations. You make the parade - we'll bring the weather. If you play the guitar and don’t want to learn music theory, you can now play seven modes in all twelve keys instantly. My Modes Method shows you how to move a fingering pattern (that incorporates all six strings) up or down the neck by counting frets. Yes, it’s that simple. You just learn one fingering position and move it around. Think about it--all these modes are available in every key instantly, without memorizing note names:
MIXOLYDIAN AEOLIAN LYDIAN IONIAN PHRYGIAN DORIAN & LOCRIAN I’ve been using this method for 21 years, playing for 42 years. It works every time-never play a wrong note. You won’t believe how this will expand your playing ability. Bypass music theory. Only $10.00, and you don’t pay any shipping charge. Works for bass, acoustic guitar and electric guitar. Write me for part of the text, free. I’m not a scammer; I can prove this to you. http://www.modesmethod.mysite.com/cgi-bin/blog From Modes Method users: When I first looked at your explanation, I thought to myself, there is no way it is this easy; then I started playing different scales based on your theory-and it actually works. I’m impressed. -Josh Just getting into the info -- great concept! -- lots of possibilities --Thanks, Don It's funny, you play for years and you tend to over look some of the simple things that tie it all together. Thats what your method did for me, just remembering where the root notes are and sliding the modes up or down is a simple thing but you forget that when your thiking about other things going on in the song. Thanks, Joe Wow!.....I am speechless. Its sounds way to good to be true. Though it is comforting to know a few good decent people do exist. Thank you, for offering such a incredible service.
