The St. Louis Area Foodbank’s (STLAFB) mission is to feed hungry people by distributing food throughout the bi-state region and engage the community in the fight against hunger. Founded in 1975, the organization is the bi-state region’s largest non-profit 501(c)(3) food distribution center dedicated to feeding those in need.

Through their network of more than 500 partner agencies (e.g. food pantries), they distribute 48 million pounds (valued at $80 million and estimated to provide 32 million meals) of both perishable and non-perishable food via delivery and warehouse pickup. Thanks to the generous support from donors (individuals, corporations, foundations, and The United Way) and the 15,000 volunteers in the Food Repackaging Center, they provide food assistance to more than 57,000 individuals each week in 26 counties in Eastern Missouri and Southwestern Illinois where an estimated one of eight people face food insecurity. Food is donated to the St. Louis Area Foodbank by food manufacturers, farmers, grocery chains and other food suppliers.

The St. Louis Area Foodbank is a member of Feeding America – a nationwide network of over 200 food banks. The St. Louis Area Foodbank has a large 96,000 square foot warehouse (non-refrigerated and refrigerated) built in 2007 and a fleet of delivery trucks. Since moving into the new warehouse ten years ago, the amount of food distributed has quadrupled.

SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The CEO will review and suggest revisions to the newly developed vision/mission/strategy/priorities for the organization, and to ensure achievement of the mission

The CEO oversees a staff of 60 individuals with five direct reports (VP Product Sourcing, SVP Operations, VP Development, VP Finance, Director of Communications).

Key Performance Indicators:

6 months:
Establish oneself as the 26-county area leader in food banking, hunger outreach and the food industry.
Evaluate the staff from a capabilities and future growth perspective.
Host meetings with key corporate supporters and community leaders.
Evaluate the state of hunger and food insecurity in the region and provide feedback on the adequacy of the St. Louis Area Foodbank’s operations, partnerships and distribution network to meet those needs.
Evaluate and provide feedback on the St. Louis Area Foodbank’s strategic plan.
12 months:
Nurture relationships of trust with corporate sponsors, community leaders, key donors and key partner agencies.
Be the proactive voice for hunger in our communities, the go-to resource for local media and the trusted advisor of state and local government officials on policies affecting hunger, food insecurity and nutrition.
Leverage the Hunger Engagement Center to bring about greater public awareness of hunger issues and to host state and local leaders on issues of hunger.
Develop and begin to implement a plan to structure the St. Louis Area Foodbank’s operations and partner network to optimize MPIN impact and access to nutritious foods in critically underserved areas – St. Charles County, St. Louis County and St. Louis City.
Develop and begin to implement a complete operational plan that supports the effective pursuit of St. Louis Area Foodbank’s current Strategic Plan.
Vision and Strategic Leadership:

Lead and enhance an effective organization which has a culture based on excellence and client service, and which attracts, retains and motivates a diverse, high-quality staff.

Create a vision for the St. Louis Area Foodbank in ten years – the operational and facility footprint, community leadership, political support, key partnerships and impassioned donor base necessary to make meaningful progress toward ending hunger in our 26-county region.

Identify opportunities and threats for the St. Louis Area Foodbank to further service of our mission in a changing world – distribution dynamics, digital trends, food industry transformation, demographics and shifting political priorities.

Management / Financial Administration:

Direct and manage the St. Louis Area Foodbank staff; build a strong team-oriented environment with an emphasis on results and accountability.
Establish and maintain a culture of openness, fairness, and respect for all employees, as well as work/life balance.
Develop and lead the implementation of annual budget and operating plans, approved by the Board, to achieve St. Louis Area Foodbank’s strategic objectives and mission.
Fundraising / Development:

Grow the St. Louis Area Foodbank’s corporate relationships and base of support – built on a shared passion for our mission and sustained through regular communication on hunger issues.
Drive and oversee the strategy for area brand awareness and recruit the millennial generation to support our mission as well as a program for planned gifts to support growth of the endowment.
Communicate with grant-makers regarding the vision for food banking and the organization’s strategy, and engage funders as thought partners of St. Louis Area Foodbank initiatives.
Board of Directors Relationship:

Work collaboratively with Board members and committees. Attend committee meetings regularly and keep up-to-date on progress and issues and assist in establishing appropriate objectives. Communicate information in a timely manner to ensure full and informed consent about matters of corporate governance.
Help identify new candidates to be considered for addition to the Board with the goal of building diversity that reflects the community we serve. Assist in other Board development activities, including onboarding and ensuring effective communication between staff and directors.
Nurture and continue to develop the Board’s focus on fundraising.
Proactively bring ideas for continuous improvement and investment to the Board’s attention to enhance SLAFB’s ability to fill its mission.
Human Resource Management:

Retain and attract high-performing team members with the knowledge, skills, energy, and passion for the vision, mission, and strategic plan of St. Louis Area Foodbank.
Create a structured employee development program and provide access to all employees.
Outreach and Communication:

Establish working relationships and regular communication channels with state and local government officials to educate on issues of food insecurity and advocate for effective solutions.
Promote the mission of St. Louis Area Foodbank with passion both internally and to the public to increase awareness of its mission and its successes.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Proven senior-level hands-on day-to-day experience of operational and financial management in a growing organization.
Demonstration of prior strategic leadership
Demonstrated problem-solver and a pragmatic risk-taker.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple constituents, advocates and professionals from different backgrounds and cultures.
Experience serving on the Board of or working at a not-for-profit organization (preferred).
Fundraising from individuals, corporations, and foundations (preferred).

Unquestioned ethics and integrity.
EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree. An advanced degree, preferably an MBA is a plus.
